STANDING TALL
On Wednesday, March 10th, at the March Membership Forum Brian Vogt, past President of the Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce was presented with a recognition leaf on the MDRF Tree of Life for his ongoing partnership and support.  Brian has taken a position with Governor Owens in the Office of Economic Development and International Trade.  Former Arapahoe County Commission John Brackney will fulfill Brian's position as the new president of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce.  Both Brian and John presented their "Standing Tall" program along with Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson and Cunningham Fire Chief Jerry Rhodes.  Standing Tall is a training program that covers the basics of emergency preparedness for the home and office.

Can We Say Recovery Yet?
2004 Economic Forecast for the Denver Metro Area
by Patti Silverstein,
Development Research Partners
www.developmentresearch.net

Can we say recovery yet? Patti Silverstein, President of Development Research Partners, gave us the bad news and the good news for 2004 at the SMDRA February Membership Forum.

Leading index figures showed that 2002 was the worst year ever for the Metro Denver area.  Silverstein said we improved in 2003 but we are still behind the rest of the United States.  2004 should show an improvement as new jobs are added.  Forty-five percent of the new jobs added were in Arapahoe and Douglas County but trends for 2004 are leaning towards the northeast corridor.  Colorado was the fourth in the nation for most job growth in small businesses.

There are significantly less new people migrating to the Denver area but home sales have remained consistent, with a slight decline, due to the lower interest rates .  More people are deciding to buy a home instead of rent and there was a 3-5% home appreciation rate.  Home affordability is GOOD!

According to Silverstein, " Can we say recovery yet?  No . . . but we are getting closer!
