SMDRA 2004 REALTOR® of the Year Award
Eva Mitchell

Littleton, September 17, 2004—The South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) recently bestowed its highest honor of 2004 REALTOR® Of The Year Award to Eva Mitchell, of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. This annual award is given to a member of SMDRA who has provided exemplary service to both the Association and the community.  Mitchell was honored at the 2004-2005 SMDRA Inaugural Celebration held at the new Marriott Hotel South.

 

Eva Mitchell, a member of SMDRA since October 1989, has served as a SMDRA Director since 2000.  She is the 2005 Secretary for the SMDRA Board of Directors.  She has also served five years on the Political Survival Fund’s Leaders of the PAC and four years on the IPAC R & R Committees.

 

Mitchell is extremely involved in the Colorado Association of REALTORS® (CAR) serving six years on the CAR Legislative Committee and four years on the CAR Issues Committee.   

 

Because of her expertise in selling land, Mitchell was given the nickname, the “Queen of Dirt”.  She was responsible for the sell of the Phipps Venneford Ranch to a group of investors that included Marvin Davis who then in turn sold the property to Mission Viejo who developed Highlands Ranch.

 

She has also provided community support by founding and serving on the Columbine Joint Task Force from 1999-2000 as a result of the Columbine High School tragedy.

 

She was the 1984 REALTOR® of the Year for the Denver Association of REALTORS® and in 1990 she was inducted into the Omega Tau Rho honorary fraternity of the National Association of REALTORS®.

 

Mitchell is originally from Neuernburg, Germany and moved to the United States in 1954 with her four children.

Kati Harken To Lead SMDRA

Presidential Inauguration

REALTOR® Kati Harken, Prestige Real Estate Group, was instated as the President/Chairman of the Board of the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) at the recent 2004-2005 Inaugural Celebration for SMDRA at the new Marriott Hotel South.  Making it a family affair, Harken was installed by her proud father, REALTOR® Hank Edler, the 1987 President of SMDRA.

 

A member of SMDRA since February 1996, Harken was first elected to the SMDRA Board of Directors in 2000.  She has held the title of director continuously since 2000 and she was the 2003-2004 President-Elect of SMDRA.

 

Harken has served on numerous committees for SMDRA included the REALTOR® Issues Review and Recommendation Committee from 1997-2003, the Affordable Housing Committee, the Equal Opportunity/Cultural Diversity Committee and the Member Benefits Committee.  She was also the 2002 SMDRA Affiliate Liaison and from 1998-2003 she participated on the Candidate Interview Committee.

 

She graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 1982 and attended Puget Sound University in Washington where she earned a BA in Psychology.  Staying in Washington, she worked for United Bank in the Securities Division before moving back to Denver, where she worked for Solomon Smith and Barney.

 

Harken is an avid sports enthusiast.  She enjoys golfing, hiking and climbing fourteeners with her husband Dale.  They also compete year-round on a co-ed recreational softball team.

REALTOR® Association Leadership Installed
The 2005 Officers and Directors for the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) were recently installed at the 2005 Inaugural and Awards Dinner at the new Marriott Hotel South.

REALTOR® Kati Harken from Prestige Real Estate Group was installed as the 2004-2005 President/Chair for SMDRA.  Harken joined SMDRA in 1996.  She is the daughter of Hank Elder, the 1989 President of SMDRA.

 

REALTOR® Rohn Goldstein, Prestige Real Estate Group will serve as Chair-Elect, REALTOR® Eva Mitchell, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, will carry out the responsibilities of Secretary and REALTOR® Gary Morton, Prudential Colorado Real Estate, will serve as Past President.

 

Assuming the responsibilities of Directors for SMDRA are the following REALTORS®:  Kaeti Bancroft, Metro Brokers-Bancroft Properties; Deb Conner, RealtyPro International; Robert Frazee, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage; Phil Gottlieb, RealtyPro International; Stephen McGuire, RE/MAX Professionals; Stew Meagher, Metro Brokers-Commonwealth Realty; Steven Olson, Prestige Real Estate Group; and Scott Scribner, RealtyPro International.

SMDRA 2004 Active Life Member Award 
Bruce Wolf

REALTOR® Bruce Wolf, a Broker Associate with Prestige Real Estate Group, LLC, was presented the Active Life Member Award at the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) 2004-2005 Inaugural Celebration at the new Marriott Hotel South.  This award pays tribute to an outstanding REALTOR® for their significant and ongoing contribution to SMDRA and/or the community.

 

Wolf has over 30 years of experience working with horse property, country properties, vacant land and land development in Colorado.  He first joined SMDRA in June of 1974 and has since earned the respect and admiration of his fellow REALTORS® and the general public.  He was chosen the 1986 SMDRA REALTOR® of the Year and was elected as the 1995 President of SMDRA.

 

From 1993-1995 he was elected Treasurer of CAR (Colorado Association of REALTORS®).  He was the 1998 President of CAR and in 2002 he earned the title of CAR REALTOR® of the Year.

 

In 1999, he was appointed to a three-year term on the NAR (National Association of REALTORS®) Board of Directors.  In 2001-2002, he was the NAR Presidential Appointee as Vice-Chair of the NAR Finance Committee.  He is currently a candidate for the position of NAR Treasurer for 2006.

 

Wolf graduated from the University of Colorado earning a BA in Political Science with a minor in Economics.  He is a 1962 graduate of Littleton High School.  Giving support to his hometown, he was appointed to the Board of Directors for Littleton’s Western Welcome Week in 1994 and was the 2001-2002 President of Western Welcome Week.  He is also an elected official for the City of Littleton serving as the Treasurer of Littleton’s Fire Protection District.

SMDRA 2004 
Affiliate of the Year Award

Jack Zelkin

Jack Zelkin, from Village Homes, was this year’s recipient of the Affiliate of the Year Award from the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA).  Zelkin was presented the award at the 2004-2005 SMDRA Inaugural Celebration at the Marriott Hotel South.  This award recognizes an affiliate of SMDRA who has given outstanding support to the association and has shown a willingness to serve on the association’s numerous committees for special events and functions.

As an active member of SMDRA for seven years, Zelkin served as Affiliate Council Liaison from 1997-1999 years. He has served on the REALTOR®/Builder Committee, the REALTOR® Rally and three years on the CARHOF Legacy Fund Drive Committee.

Zelkin has given his support at the Metro Denver REALTOR® Foundation’s golf tournaments, the annual Bacchus Wine Tasting and the Stapleton Stampede.

A native Denverite, Zelkin attended North High School and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Marketing and Finance.  Before his eight year tenure with Village Homes, Zelkin first worked for the Public Service Company of Colorado and then with Northwest Mortgage as an Energy Project Consultant. 

Zelkin has two children and four grandchildren.

SMDRA 2004 Rising Star Award

Roger Evans

REALTOR® Roger Evans, from Prestige Real Estate Group was presented the 2004 Rising Star Award, formerly the Don B. Weist Award, at the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) 2004-2005 Inaugural Celebration at the new Marriott Hotel South.  This award is presented to a member who has provided outstanding service to the association and to the community during the first five years of their real estate career.

 

Evans joined SMDRA in February of 2000. He has served on SMDRA’s Professional Standards Committee from 2001 to 2003.  He has also served on SMDRA’s Political Survival Fund - Leaders of the PAC and the GEEK Speak Committees.

 

Evans, a consistent producer, earned the GRI, Graduate of REALTOR® Institute, designation his first year as a REALTOR®, the E-pro Certification in his second year and recently the CRS, Certified Residential Specialist, designation.

 

Born in Iowa and raised in Illinois by his mother and football coach father, Evans excelled in all sports – baseball playing 1st base and outfield, wrestling and of course football as a tight end.  He went to Rock Island University of Illinois where he earned a degree in Agricultural Economics.  He was president of his fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa, at Rock Island.

 

His degree gave him a future in the grain export business starting in Illinois, then Iowa and Nebraska and eventually to Colorado in 1985.

 

Evans plans for the future are to build up his excellent client base along with his business partner and wife, Jerry Evans.

SMDRA 2004 Community Service Award

Susan Thorton
Susan Thorton, former mayor of Littleton, received the distinguished Community Service Award presented to an individual by the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) at their 2004-2005 Inaugural Celebration at the Marriott Hotel South  This award recognizes an individual in the south metro Denver area who promotes “Community Spirit”.

 

Thorton is an endless worker for the City of Littleton.  She was first elected to the Littleton City Council in November of 1987, she was re-elected in 1991, 1995 and 1999.  She served as Littleton’s mayor from 1989 to 1993, as mayor pro tem from 1993-1995 and then again from 1997-1999, and was re-elected as mayor in 1999, serving from 1999-2003 when she became term limited. After leaving the Littleton City Council she served on the Business Industry Affairs Committee.
 

Thorton is passionate about improving the Littleton community.  She was a steering committee member of Littleton Unlimited from 1993-1996, a member of the South Metro Chamber’s Economic Development Council from 1992-1993, and she co-chaired a Gold Ribbon Committee for Littleton Public Schools. 

 

In 1993, the Littleton Independent named Thorton, Littleton’s “Most Valuable Citizen”.  She also received a “Distinguished Service Award” from the Denver Regional Council of Governments in 1994. 

 

Thorton graduated Cum Laude from Michigan State University and then received her Masters in Journalism Cum Laude from the University of California at Los Angeles.  After graduation, Susan wrote articles for publication in U.S. News and World Report, The National Observer, Time, Fortune and Money magazines.  She is the current co-owner of Health Media Group and Owner and President of Media Images.

 

In her spare time she is a clinical instructor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center’s Department of Preventative Medicine and the School of Nursing.  She also enjoys playing in the Colorado Isle of Mull/St. Andrew Pipes & Drums Bagpipe Band. She also participates in and judges pipe band competition across the western United States.

 

Past individual Community Service Award recipients have included Gene Koelbel, Dr. Frank Sargent, former District Attorney Bob Gallagher Jr., Executive Director Dave Lorenz from the South Suburban Park and Recreation District, Vern Hendrickson from Norwest Bank, Vaughn Gardinier,  Mary Bradford, President of Bradford Auto Body in Littleton and Bob Sweeney, publisher of the Villager Newspaper.

SMDRA 2004 Community Service Award
City of Littleton

This year’s distinguished Community Service Award to an organization was presented to the city of Littleton by the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association (SMDRA) at their 2004-2005 Inaugural Celebration at the new Marriott Hotel South.  This award recognizes an organization in the south metro Denver area that is actively involved in the community, charitable work or civic activities.

 

The City of Littleton has been responsible for several public service projects that have had a positive impact on the community as well as on the life of its citizens.  The city has developed a vigorous citizen-outreach program which includes the Littleton Report, neighborhood outreach meetings and an interactive web site.  They have provided computerized library services and a life-saving E-911 system.  Downtown Littleton was named to the National Register of Historic Places and a historic preservation ordinance and district were put in place.  The city developed a strategic approach to youth-development and violence-prevention, an innovative award winning program was enacted to strengthen local businesses, and the police department added Neighborhood Liaison Officers and School Resource Officers.

 

In addition the City of Littleton has made major infrastructure improvements to its roads, parks and buildings.  The city is in the process of implementing major safety improvements with the construction of Fire Station #12 and a new police administration facility.

 

On behalf of the City of Littleton, Littleton Mayor John Ostermiller and Littleton City Manager Jim Woods accepted the Community Service Award for 2004 and a check for $500.

 

Past Community Service Award recipients have included Craig Hospital, the Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, the Cancer League of Colorado, the Sungate Child Advocacy Center, Advocates for Children, South Suburban Park & Recreation District, Littleton Town Hall Arts Center and Interfaith Community Services.
